Karuna NYC

As we (hopefully!) transition out of the cool weather into the warm summer months, we can take the time to renew our dedication to healthy and happy living. Small changes to our lifestyle through yoga, diet and the awareness to slow down now and then, can have huge effects on our overall health and well-being.

So, take the time to find areas where you can fine tune.
Here’s to a beautiful summer and more yoga!

The early days of warm weather are so easy to embrace - we move more and often find it easier to get back into riding, running, walking and yoga. Spending more time outdoors in the sun, humidity and heat may mean you are sweating more, and may need to replenish the minerals lost through perspiration.

Jessica Shepard, holistic health counselor in New York City, believes that electrolytes, calcium and potassium are the big three that most of us need to replenish during warmer weather.

“Calcium is needed for muscle contraction and when it’s lacking can cause muscle cramping. Potassium deficiency causes muscle fatigue and weakness. The combination of electrolytes, calcium and potassium aid in nervous system and muscle function, fluid balance, heart, kidney and adrenal function,” Shepard says.

We can replenish with certain foods, supplements and coconut water, which contains natural sugars and more potassium than most sports drinks. For calcium and potassium Shepard recommends foods such as organic dairy, dark leafy greens, sardines and bananas.

Try not to wait until your body starts cramping to re-fuel your body. Jessica Shepard can be contacted at jrsmassage@yahoo.com for more information.

Watermelon Summer Salad — a wonderful addition to any summer barbecue.
It’s easy, delicious, healthy & refreshing!

  1. Place the onion slices in a small bowl with the lime juice. The acid of the lime will mellow the flavor of the raw onion. Let stand for 10 minutes.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the watermelon cubes, feta cheese, black olives, onions with the lime juice, and mint. Drizzle olive oil over it all, and toss to blend.
